“Hindu bashing” accusers stage protest
A small group of individuals from the Hindu Common Front Force staged a protest in front of the Port Louis headquarters of La Sentinelle and Le Mauricien on Friday 13 October. The group had started off its campaign against the two media outlets with illegal posters blaming them for alleged “Hindu bashing”.
The signs seemed to indicate animosity towards La Sentinelle and Le Mauricien for criticising certain particular members of the government, including Ravi Rutnah, who was himself condemned live by the prime minister on a private radio for his use of disparaging language against women. The protesters also showed support for Ravi Yerrigadoo, former attorney general, who was forced to step down following the Yerrigadoogate scandal, Vijaya Sumputh, who had to resign from the Cardiac Centre following contentious salary hikes and even Speaker Maya Hanoomanjee, whose daughters have been at the heart of their own controversies.
Unionist Georges Ah Yan, who was present during the protest, condemned its participants. He argued that the press is doing a crucial job in bringing news and revealing scandals to the population. “I don’t think there is anything racist in that,” he said.
