No more!
You would not have to look long and hard to see signs of disappointment and despair at the current regime. However, the real tragedy does not limit itself to the incompetence of the Alliance Lepep. It encompasses the lack of an alternative, a legitimate one.
Many have preached a renewal of the political class in Mauritius but that would not be enough by any stretch of the imagination. As unwilling as we are to hear this, we share a lot of the blame as citizens of this country. Not because the lack of a real solution forces our hand come election time but rather because we are too passive. Our innate ability to overlook real news or to simply not care has pushed us to the edge of a dangerous future.
To a certain extent, it does not even matter to the Mauritian population that several of our current MPs have had to face the law for a multitude of offences. Yet, one of the most revealing piece of information recently has been Sangeet Fowdar’s conflict resolution with his party and his decision to simply fade back to where he was a few weeks ago – into oblivion. In a spectacular rant during a live interview, Fowdar had blamed the ruling coalition – of which he forms part – for what he perceived to be unfair political nominations and various irregularities. He even threatened to resign and cause a by-election after he was initially suspended by the Muvman Liberater (ML).
That was before the Raj Dayal and Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo debacle even saw the light of day. Now with the government showing all the signs of weaknesses that Fowdar had spoken about, not that we were unaware of that, he found it best to sneak back to his initial position as an MP that everyone tends to forget. How does that not shock anyone? How do we just let that go?
If Fowdar does not end up getting anything out of this, it would be the epitome of mediocrity of Mauritian politics. If he does, then fair enough. He would just be like a number of our politicians looking for their personal gain on the backs of their unsuspecting voters.
It would not matter if new politicians came along if the ideas remain the same. We are made to believe that the three major political parties all practice their own brands of socialism and that the diverging philosophies are fuelling a healthy democracy. Let’s be real. They all talk the same and they all think the same. It’s no surprise that they are all collaborating one day and then chastising each other soon after. They sell us political incompetence in the name of misunderstood prowess.
Fowdar is not the first one to be an inept MP and he will not be the last one. However, we don’t need that anymore. What we need are countercultural vagabonds, like those who fought for our independence, who would provide a real political alternative. What we need is someone to stand up and say no more. No more!
