Local gov "elections": fat joke!

-Hey bro, what are your plans this week?
-Gonna become the town's newly "elected" mayor.
-If it's an election, then how do you know?
-Oh, the leader votes for me.....
This is basically, what it takes to become a mayor in charge of a town or even better, in charge of the capital city of the Republic of Mauritius. This same treacherous show of solemn "elections" goes on and on, mandate after mandate without any kind of disruption. It happens that some throw the words local government's autonomy here and there from time to time but it only resonates likes an empty drum. To be totally fair, I must admit that those participating in the show usually look proud of their submissive behavior, who knows maybe luck will strike on them next time. In the meantime, we are facing the same lack of innovation and initiative, this heavy drowsiness and sometimes incompetency at the head of the towns. No Sir, being a mayor doesn't only imply the renovation of market fairs and construction of drainage systems. What about nightlife? What about the rejuvenation plans? What about innovative projects? What about competition? What about imagination? What about easing the life of the citizens? What makes one town stand out from the others? Nothing does. That's the realistic truth, our towns are in deep lethargy, where there ain't even a real election, where each member can vote in all secrecy and responsibly to determine who will be the new boss. The boss now being, Sun Trust.
Let's be the devil's advocate for a second, but they dont have financial means, how for god's sake do you want them to do more on their own? That's exactly what should make the difference between having the right person in the right seat and appointing anybody to any seat. The right person will consult the other right persons, will dare try, will launch projects with the aim of driving return on investment, will generate money and will innovate, having in mind the benefits of the town's population. The right mayor, full of inventive means will produce the results he/she endeavors to get. Unfortunately, in local as in higher government, licking the right boots often turns out to be more...personally productive.
