Rama Valayden: Siphoning of police officers by Metro Express
Within the Republic of Mauritius whenever something is going awry because of the lack of foresight by our Honourable Leaders, there is only one dumping ground … The Police Force … One example: after every flood the police becomes by the sleight of ministerial calloused hands a cocktail of social workers, NGO’s, probation officers, and many unpalatable jobs are forced into the mouth of police officers.
The new task that has been dumped upon the police force is to regulate:
- The metro depot (regular police officers and SSU);
- The metro stations (from Rose-Hill to Port-Louis via Riche Terre);
- The metro cars;
- The CCTV covering the route of metro including the surroundings of metro stations (which are not properly covered to avoid wind, rain and other climatic conditions);
- The dangerous generators which are not properly encapsulated – and with no conspicuous warning notices in only one language and already in a potable condition;
- The different cross overs specially at Beau-Bassin [Pope-Henessy; Van Der Meersh and Beau-Bassin roundabout, and Port-Louis;
- The traffic light is not properly regulated (surely the Honourable Leaders have not read a “Very British Coup” nor seen the film) nor planification made to be checked on a daily basis. Don’t ask for the price of these traffic lights which will not stand the test of a gust of 80 kilometre per hour. So, more police officer.
- I am given to understand that in case of flash flood, torrential rain or heavy downpour, the Metro Express will not be able to operate for security reasons. No escape route for the water! Who will do the work? SMF!!
- Do you believe that as soon as a Class II warning comes into force the Metro Express will fly to its depot expressly?
- Who will regulate the rush? Police officers?
- Do you believe that 122 police officers are siphoned every day (if you see 3 police officers you must multiply by 3 to cover the shift system)?
- What about emergency? Simple contravention! Accident! No need to expatiate … and Beau-Bassin police station will become a “coquille vide for lack of staff”. More police officers?
- Who will pay police officers? Metro Express! No! The government. So why no police officers on every bus to protect passengers and workers? Don’t flush logic.
122 police officers!
Yes … and in the future if nothing is done the number will increase …
Will our Honourable Leaders draw the preliminary lessons? No! Curepipe … Quatre-Bornes will suffer the same fate.
Our leaders are omniscient! Our pockets are deeper than the legendary “soset arab”!
“With trepidations and provocations”.

N.B – A non-exhaustive list for more police involvement:
- Irresponsible behaviour…
- Hooliganism behaviour!
- Destructive behaviour
- Cross line at stations (jumping-skateboard-challenges-drunkenness)
- Special event and crowding
- Doors opening early! Doors refusing to open … (passenger /workers falling)
- Doors opened while on full swing
- Door on the wrong side opened by accident
- The decoupling of the carriage leading to standing passengers falling off
- Passengers or workers hit by closing doors …
- Loss of balance (old people, young children and pregnant women) – loss of balance on stairs and escalators
More police officers or will we imitate India and launched a “Railway Protection Force” the RPF which is under the Ministry of Railways employs about 65,000 people. “Train not metro”
