In this world of sin and woe

Only the stars are with us

In this world of din and noise

Only our breath keeps us company

In this world of chaos and crime

It is only our conscience which safeguards us

In this world of distances in the same home

It is only a question of endurance

In this world of technology and internet

The spiritual net is switched off for so many

In this game of life and soul

Death is the only mysterious reality

In this game of loveless fun and love

Love is the most unused entity

In this game of conniving and cunningness

Truth hides in the process willingly

In this game of huge villas and material pursuits

The needy one is a rat in a hole

In this game of idols, saints and supreme powers

Faith gets into doubts and confusion

In the final struggle of belief and sincere obedience

The soul gets entangled in worldly confusion

Dr Anitah Aujayeb

Having been writing for a long time, her latest book is entitled “The Last Pilgrimage”, from which this poem comes. A long-standing educator in Literature in English at both secondary and tertiary levels, she is also the Chairperson of the President’s Fund for Creative Writing, under the aegis of the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage, a unit which caters for publication of books of Mauritian authors. She devotes her time to the promotion of literature, in all genres, and literature in all languages has always been her passion.
