Simple ways to tackle traffic jams
Traffic jams occur mainly in the morning and afternoon. These times are obviously when most people leave home and return in the afternoon. We have been used to working between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. What can be done? Is there no way to review those times? But there is another way which is now becoming verypopular in most countries: work from home.
Work from home
A lot of office work can be done from home. To work using electronic means is replacing office work in many developed countries. Mauritians are familiar with working with other companies in the world using these methods. It will therefore be easy to introduce such methods in the Mauritian context.
Staggered hours
The way is for some firms to work from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., others 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. etc. and being conservative in this is very detrimental to the country in the long term.
Tertiary education
By making students stay at home and study through distance learning methods. This is another way of reducing traffic on the road.
Is building more roads the solution?
We need not build too many roads as this is costly if we extend the metro line overhead.
Carpooling
In Singapore, only cars which carry at least four persons are allowed to enter the busy city centre. In some parts of China, instead of building more roads where there are bottlenecks, the authorities build two more roads one over the other parallel to the existing road, giving them three roads to three different destinations. This cannot be applied to Mauritius . No need to put a heavy car duty on new imported cars to reduce traffic jams.
