The Pope’s visit: Leaving a lasting legacy

Angkush Poonye.

À l’heure du tout à l’image et du buzz sans suite, «l’express» souhaite faire découvrir la plume de poètes, de chanteurs, d’écrivains et de tous ceux qui jettent leur âme sur le papier, et qui mettent en mots des réflexions profondes.

On the much-awaited Monday 09/09/19,

Our Mauritian soil was graced by his holiness Pope Francis,

An apostolic journey and a saintly blessing for us,

A memorable and unique public holiday for us.

On that morning, in front of the Mary Queen of Peace Monument

The People of God gathered devotedly in thousands,

It was not a mass of the Pope to the pilgrims only,

It was not a mass of the Pope to the Catholics only,

But – to Mauritius in all its religious diversity.

Warmly greeted by thousands of waving palm leaves,

The Pope witnessed the strength of our multi-cultural roots,

The Pope applauded our stable and prosperous nation,

The Pope convinced us to preserve our cocoon of fraternity.

His Holiness Pope Francis showered his love on the youth,

Recognizing the struggles of the younger generations,

Acknowledging their uncertainties and the unpredictabilities they face,

And yet, instilling trust and belief in their hearts.

The Pope’s short one-day visit had to come to an end,

With an accomplished mission of

Mending souls and winning hearts,

Spreading the fragrance of peace further,

And we pledge to treasure his blessings for a lifetime!
