Près d’un an après que le MV Wakashio se soit échoué sur les récifs de Pointe d’Esny provoquant une importante marée noire, le spectre du vraquier japonais plane toujours. En effet, les habitants ont eu la désagréable surprise de découvrir des traces d’huiles sur la plage ce mardi 6 juillet. Celle-ci avait été nettoyée par la société grecque Polyeco jusqu’en janvier dernier. Des photos prises par une habitante ont été reprises sur la page Facebook de l’ONG EcoSud. Pour l’heure, aucune autorité n’a réagi suite à cette découverte. Selon les premières indications, il n’y aurait pas pas de bouées anti-pollution autour de l’épave dont le démantèlement prend beaucoup plus de temps que prévu.

Le ministère de l'Environnement a réagi dans un communiqué émis en fin d'après-midi :
"Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change
Update concerning traces of oil residues at Pointe d’Esny
The Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change received information from brand Marine Consultants at 08.52 hrs today concerning the presence of oil residues on the beach near Astroea Hotel at Pointe d’Esny.
A site visit was effected by officers of this Ministry, NCG, and Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping today itself, to take cognizance of the situation. It was observed that there was presence of tar balls, approximately 0.5 to 5 cm in diameter, scattered at the high water mark line, mixed with algae, over a distance of 1400 metres from Astroea hotel towards Club Nautique,Pointe d’Esny.
No floating oil or tar balls could be observed near the wreck of MV Wakashio. No tarballs or floating oil has been observed on Ile aux Aigrettes and Blue Bay Public Beach. The water in the lagoon was clear and no sheen was observed.
Officers the National Environmental Laboratory and from Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping have collected seawater and sediment samples for analysis of hydrocarbons, respectively.
Officers of the NCG and Polyeco SA started clean up of the shoreline at Pointe d’Esny today, and Polyeco SA will continue tomorrow.
Monitoring will be maintained."
