Le Premier ministre britannique, Rishi Sunak, préfèrera-t-il jouer la carte de la prudence sur le dossier Chagos ? En effet, une cessation de la souveraineté de l’archipel à Maurice est désormais considérée comme une mise en danger sécuritaire au niveau des îles Malouines, ouvrant ainsi la porte à l’Argentine. Un article rapporte que le thinktank Policy Exchange a, à cet effet, souligné l’année dernière : «By agreeing the very principle of a Mauritian claim on Diego Garcia, they are also putting at risk other British Overseas Territories such as the Falkland Islands.» Ainsi, il mettait en garde les Britanniques que céder les Chagos serait un «selfinflicted blow» ainsi qu’une grande victoire pour la Chine. C’est Lord West of Spithead, un amiral de la Royal Navy à la retraite, qui, dans un forward du rapport, avait déclaré : «How on earth can the government explain a decision to negotiate with Chinese-aligned Mauritius to hand over sovereignty. Il would be a colossal mistake.» Ajoutant : «Far from being an integral part of Mauritius, the linkage of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, more than 2,00 km away, arose… as an accident of colonial history, which was then perpetuated for reasons of convenience. (…) The government should recognise that ceding the Chagos Islands, especially on mistaken legal premises, would be an irresponsible act, which would… recklessly undermine fundamental principles of international law.»
